They were the ancient main gates of the Forest, and as their name shows, it was through them the entrance when coming from Coimbra.

The Pope's Bull, that attributes the Forest to the "Carmelitas Descalços" as well as the edict forbidding the entrance of women into the Forest, can nowadays be read in two large stones here present.
