Note from the Director:

The difference in the classification of the Alegre Hotel, according to Portuguese and other country's laws is due to the lack of a lift and service column serving all the floors of the building. Due to the internal architecture and several modifications introduced in the late XIX century, it is technically impossible to implement such demands without disfiguration of both house interior and exterior. It has been our company's policy (following the suggestion of most of the developed countries laws) to defend the beauty of the architecture of the building against technological and modern life aggressive demands, even if that means not to receive handicap guests and have to maintain a lower star classification. With the help of our guests that continue to believe in our service and experience, we are doing our best to change that in the near future.
